Litter becoming a growing problem in Stone County
SUMMARY: Littering is a significant issue in rural Mississippi, with the state investing millions to address it. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) notes that litter poses dangers, contributing to numerous accidents and fatalities. Efforts to strengthen litter laws have failed, yet programs like Adopt-a-Highway and the Inmate Litter Program collected over 72,000 bags of trash in District 6 last year. Education initiatives, including MDOT’s “Myrtle the Turtle,” focus on changing mindsets about littering. Local pride in communities, as expressed by Wiggins resident Tammy Smith, highlights the need for individual responsibility to combat litter effectively.
