SUMMARY: More than a dozen derelict vessels across the Mississippi Gulf Coast are set to be removed through a partnership among a nonprofit, a local business, and a state agency. The Gulf of Mexico Alliance, funded by a NOAA grant, will oversee the initiative to remove abandoned boats, which pose navigation and environmental hazards. Gulf Stream Marine will handle the removal, gutting, and sinking of the vessels to create artificial reefs, a process known as reefing, with assistance from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the Gulf’s ecosystem and promote a sustainable future. Over the next four years, around 20 abandoned ships will be removed from the region.

SUMMARY: Mississippi Heroes, a nonprofit, is installing faster handicap ramps for veterans and others in need. These ramps, which previously took a long time to assemble, are now quicker to install thanks to a new modular design. Veteran Harry Hayes received a ramp that will make life easier for him and his wife, as they often couldn’t go outside due to the difficulty. The organization is seeking help through donations and volunteer support. The new ramps, which last for 10 years, can be moved and reused when no longer needed. Over 40 people are waiting for ramps in Mississippi.

SUMMARY: Long Beach city leaders are progressing towards repairing the storm-damaged harbor, following Hurricane Zeta’s destruction of piers and docks in October 2020. In a recent meeting, aldermen voted to solicit bids for inner harbor repairs. Although FEMA awarded the city $2.58 million, rising costs due to inflation may exceed this amount. FEMA will reimburse the actual repair costs, prompting the city to finalize expenditure estimates. Harbor improvement efforts will continue under the current administration until June 30, with additional work underway on the inner bulkhead wall funded by Tidelands Gulf Restoration and Gilsa funds.
