Grocery tax cut, immigration bills among first filed in Tennessee | Tennessee
SUMMARY: Ahead of Tennessee’s 2025 legislative session, lawmakers have filed several proposals, including a grocery tax cut and immigration reform. Democrats Sen. Charlane Oliver and Rep. Aftyn Behn aim to eliminate the 4% sales tax on food, a measure that failed last year, while most states have already removed such taxes. Additionally, a bill by GOP legislators would mandate law enforcement to request immigration detainers for undocumented individuals. Sen. Jack Johnson and Rep. William Lamberth introduced the “Education Freedom Act of 2025,” which proposes $20,000 in scholarships and a $2,000 bonus for teachers, alongside raises for starting salaries.

When it snows in Nashville, these streets get cleared first
SUMMARY: A significant winter storm is expected to hit Middle Tennessee on Friday, potentially bringing 4 to 6 inches of snow and icy conditions that could persist over the weekend. The National Weather Service warns of travel impacts due to slow melting and refreezing. Metro Nashville has identified 1,800 miles of snow removal priority routes, utilizing 40 snow plows and pre-treating roads in anticipation of the snow. The Nashville Department of Transportation advises residents to avoid travel when possible and to give crews space to work. State roads in Davidson County will be maintained by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, which has substantial resources allocated for snow removal.

Organizations sign statement for ‘dignity and freedom’ against discrimination ahead of legislative session
SUMMARY: Over 100 organizations, small businesses, and congregations in Tennessee have signed the “Freedom Together” statement, advocating for dignity, freedom, and an end to discriminatory anti-LGBTQ legislation. Co-chair Dahron Johnson of the Tennessee Equality Project emphasized that the statement is a call to action, urging lawmakers to reject harmful proposals. The initiative condemns bills that threaten the LGBTQ community, citing past legislation like the 31 bills introduced last year. The statement also addresses concerns over proposed bills like HB0064, which mandates gender-segregated facilities in educational programs. The Equality Project plans to engage with the new legislative session as it begins.
