Grassroots effort begun to rehab historic Magnolia Cemetery

SUMMARY: The bridge on County Road 8, just east of Hwy 15 in Stringer, will be replaced and remains closed until further notice. Concurrently, the 125-year-old Historic Magnolia Cemetery is showing signs of deterioration. Community efforts led by Meridian native and former WTOK-TV General Manager Tracey Jones are underway to raise funds for repairs. A fund has been established at the Community Foundation of East Mississippi to facilitate tax-deductible donations. Donated funds will be managed by an advisory board which will get bids for the necessary work, and the Community Foundation will directly pay the bills. Tupelo waiting on Target to make decision on new store

Volunteers requested for local “Grow-a-Row” program to combat hunger

SUMMARY: A local nonprofit, Petal Healing Garden, is collaborating with the Forest County Agricultural Extension Office on the Grow a Row program to combat food insecurity. Volunteers can participate after completing a food safety course led by Jesse Tisdale. The program not only helps with food donations but also offers a chance for the community to reconnect with gardening, filling a gap left by the loss of agricultural education in local schools. Proceeds from the initiative will benefit the Edwards Street food pantry and the Petal Children’s Task Force in Hattiesburg.
