Grassfire covering 100+ acres leads to closure of I-10 in Hancock County

SUMMARY: The State Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating a big story involving a fire that likely caused deaths due to inhalation. Massive backups have occurred on Interstate 10, causing it to be shut down and leading to traffic being diverted to Highway 603. The fire, which is affecting hundreds of acres near mile marker seven, has caused plumes of smoke visible in the sky. Westbound traffic is being rerouted to Highway 607. Pictures of the fire have been shared by viewers and the Mississippi Forestry Commission and crews are responding to the scene.

Officials say the fire began in the median, later jumping to the north side of the interstate.
