Grand jury issues scathing report on GEER funds, but no charges recommended
SUMMARY: A multi-county grand jury report criticizes the distribution of federal COVID relief funds for Oklahoma children during the pandemic, describing the process as irresponsible and disappointing. While not criminal, the report highlights that families used funds for non-essential items like doorbell cameras and gaming consoles, under the oversight of State Superintendent Ryan Walters. It notes that many families applied for private school funds too late, resulting in over 650 students missing out on tuition assistance. The grand jury indicated that more effective management could have avoided these issues, criticizing Governor Stitt’s rejection of guidance from the U.S. Department of Education.

Florida Couple Accuses Berry-Rock Homes of Fraud in Rent-to-Own Program
SUMMARY: Michael and Shannon Taylor filed a lawsuit against Berry-Rock Homes and LIV Mortgage, alleging the companies misled them during their rent-to-own agreement for a house in Yukon, Oklahoma. The Taylors claimed they were encouraged to lie about their business income by a loan officer from LIV Mortgage to secure a mortgage for the property. They also allege that Berry-Rock improperly handled their $30,700 nonrefundable deposit. After moving out, the house was listed for sale. The companies countersued, claiming the Taylors violated their agreement and sought to leverage complaints for financial gain. An $8 million state investment in Berry-Rock Homes is also under scrutiny.

Senate Republicans introduce Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act | National
SUMMARY: Senate Republicans, led by Sen. James Lankford, introduced the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, aiming to prevent neglect of infants who survive abortions. The bill mandates that health care providers must give infants who survive abortions the same care as any other newborn and transport them to a hospital immediately. It also requires reporting of any failures to provide care and sets penalties, including fines or imprisonment. Additionally, the bill allows mothers to take civil action for damages. This bill follows a previous failed attempt in 2019 and differs from the 2002 law, which did not include penalties for care violations.
