‘I can hear the train coming’: Mississippi leaders scramble after federal education funding abruptly frozen
SUMMARY: More than $137 million in COVID-19 relief funding for Mississippi education was abruptly frozen by U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, sparking outrage from state officials. The funds were expected through 2026 but halted due to shifting federal priorities. Mississippi education leaders warn the cut jeopardizes vital services like learning gap programs, mental health support, and school repairs. Lt. Gov. Hosemann warned of broader impacts, potentially reaching $500 million in losses. The Mississippi Humanities Council and other entities also face cuts. Officials urged federal reconsideration, warning the move threatens education progress and could lead to legal and financial fallout statewide.

Bill sent to governor mandating hospitals ERs to perform rape kits on victims
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers passed Senate Bill 2211, enhancing sexual assault victims’ rights, and sent it to Gov. Tate Reeves. The bill mandates hospitals with emergency rooms to conduct rape kit exams and requires law enforcement to keep victims informed about their cases. Victims will have easier access to case information, with a seven-day response deadline for law enforcement inquiries. Additionally, agencies must notify victims before disposing of evidence. Hospitals must provide forensic exams and cannot refuse victims seeking rape kits. If signed, the law will take effect on July 1, addressing previous concerns about denied exams.

Above-average hurricane season expected in Atlantic, forecasters predict
SUMMARY: Colorado State University researchers predict an above-average 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, with 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). The season runs June 1 to November 30. There’s a 33% chance of a major hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas, higher than the 27% historical average. While Atlantic waters are cooler than last year, which may temper storm strength, residents in coastal areas like Mississippi are urged to prepare early. In 2024, the Atlantic saw 18 named storms; Mississippi experienced one hurricane, Francine, which weakened after hitting Louisiana.
