Governor’s race heats up with shots fired by both candidates
SUMMARY: The Mississippi governor’s race is heating up with incumbent Tate Reeves and challenger Brandon Presley exchanging blows at the Neshoba County Fair. Presley criticized Reeves for his alleged involvement in a public welfare scandal and accused him of firing the investigator in the case. Reeves denied the claims and blamed Presley for accepting funds from out-of-state special interest groups. He also criticized Presley for accepting money from a convicted felon. The candidates also clashed over healthcare, with Presley blaming Reeves for the hospital crisis and Reeves touting positive numbers in unemployment and economic development.

Gov. Reeves signs bill phasing out Mississippi’s income tax into law
SUMMARY: Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed a bill on March 27, 2025, to eliminate the state’s income tax, reduce the grocery tax, and fund infrastructure projects. The bill, authored by Rep. Trey Lamar, will gradually cut the personal income tax to 3% by 2030, with full elimination by 2037. The grocery sales tax will drop to 5% this summer. Despite legislative infighting, including a typo that expedited tax cuts, Reeves celebrated the law as a major achievement. While some lawmakers oppose the plan, proponents argue it will boost the state’s economy by returning funds to residents and promoting growth.

Hyde-Smith casts doubt on validity of Signal chat snafu as Wicker calls for investigation
SUMMARY: The publication of an article by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, claiming he was inadvertently added to a secure Signal group chat discussing military plans against Houthi terrorists, has sparked controversy in Washington. While officials confirm the mistake, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth denied that any war plans were shared. The Atlantic subsequently released chat messages detailing aircraft types and airstrike timings. President Trump initially denied any classified information was disclosed, but later stated he was unsure. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith questioned how Goldberg acquired the information, suggesting possible unethical methods. A bipartisan call for an investigation into the matter is underway.
