Governor candidates clash over Mississippi’s Medicaid leadership
SUMMARY: Nearly 30,000 Mississippians have lost their Medicaid coverage as the Division of Medicaid (DOM) resumed eligibility reviews after the COVID-19 pandemic. From March 2020 to June 2023, an additional 200,000 Mississippians gained Medicaid coverage due to the suspension of eligibility reviews. Of the beneficiaries reviewed in June, 56% retained coverage while 29,000 people were disenrolled. Mississippi Democratic gubernatorial candidate Brandon Presley criticized DOM Executive Director Drew Snyder, stating that a healthcare professional should be appointed instead. Governor Tate Reeves’ staff defended Snyder’s work and dismissed Presley’s comment. DOM expects enrollment numbers to continue declining as eligibility reviews continue.
