FOX13 INVESTIGATES: What's being transported through our neighborhoods?
SUMMARY: Hazardous materials pose significant daily risks, with the U.S. averaging over 66 incidents of spills, leaks, and crashes involving toxic chemicals each day, totaling more than 24,000 last year. In Brinkley, Arkansas, a semi crash involving military-grade explosives underscored these dangers, prompting lengthy evacuation efforts. Memphis, a key transportation hub, is particularly vulnerable due to its dense traffic of hazardous materials via trucks and trains. Reports from various sources indicate an uptick in hazardous incidents, primarily due to improved reporting. The National Transportation Safety Board advocates for stricter safety regulations to mitigate risks, especially for first responders dealing with these hazardous situations.
Memphis is the nation’s transportation hub, with tens of thousands of semi-trucks, airplanes, and train cars moving through our area every day. Whether you realize it or not, many of those transport vehicles contain hazardous materials.
The substances may be poisonous, radioactive, corrosive, and/or flammable. Even more concerning, data show an increasing number of spills, leaks, and crashes involving those toxic chemicals.
