SUMMARY: A government shutdown in the United States could have immediate impacts on Head Start programs, which would be devastating for the 23,000 families in Mississippi who rely on these programs. While Mississippi should be okay in the short term because their grants are not on an October first cycle, federal workers, including military personnel, could be furloughed or have to work without pay. National parks would close, small businesses and farm loans would no longer be processed, and state governments would have to pay for federal services. A long-term shutdown could result in 390,000 Mississippians losing access to SNAP benefits.
