Gov. Andy Beshear named Aug. 31 Overdose Awareness Day
SUMMARY: Governor Andy Beshear has declared August 31st as Overdose Awareness Day in Kentucky, announced during the Team Kentucky update. This declaration honors a young man named John, who died from a fentanyl overdose in 2015. In July, Kentucky State Police seized over $9.6 million in drugs, facilitated by the summer heat operation, resulting in more than 200 drug-related arrests. The governor emphasized the state’s commitment to overdose awareness, stigma reduction, and enhancing treatment opportunities. He also encouraged Kentuckians to carry the overdose reversal medicine Narcan as part of ongoing efforts to support those struggling with addiction.

Biden pardon of former Kentucky Dems chair draws Republican ire | Kentucky
SUMMARY: Former Kentucky Democratic Party chairman Jerry Lundergan, convicted in 2019 for illegal campaign contributions and conspiracy, received a controversial pardon from President Joe Biden shortly before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Lundergan, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison for funding his daughter Allison Lundergan Grimes’ 2014 Senate campaign with over $200,000 in corporate funds, had his civil rights restored, including the right to vote. This pardon faced backlash from Kentucky Republicans, as state lawmakers consider measures to limit future gubernatorial pardons during election periods to ensure justice system integrity and transparency.
