Godbolt Appeal Hearing
SUMMARY: Attorney for Willie Corrigan argues that his conviction on eight murder counts and death penalty coconviction should be thrown out due to unfair trial. They claim the jury was prejudiced by evidence of prior bad acts of domestic violence and that the judge did not allow charges to be split up into separate trials. The Attorney General’s office argues that no errors were committed in the trial court and asked for Godbolt’s death sentence and convictions to be upheld. Three years ago, a jury sentenced Godbolt to death on four capital murder convictions. His attorneys also argue that his confession to a newspaper reporter should be thrown out.

Flu shuts down St. Andrew’s Episcopal School
SUMMARY: Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School is quiet as an influenza outbreak leads to the closure of all grades on Friday. The decision was made to help students recover and minimize community spread. Following advice from school nurses, high schoolers were sent home Thursday, with elementary students following Friday, halting classes until Monday. The Mississippi Department of Health reports that flu cases in the metro area have doubled recently, likely due to post-holiday school attendance. Health officials advise getting flu shots and keeping sick children at home to protect health as case numbers are expected to decrease with warmer weather in March.

Republican bill would block illegal immigrants from receiving tax breaks | National
SUMMARY: The Safeguarding American Workers’ Benefits Act, reintroduced by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, aims to prevent illegal immigrants in the U.S. from receiving Child Tax Credits (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC). The legislation mandates that parents and children need valid Social Security numbers for employment to qualify for these tax benefits. Rep. Clay Higgins has introduced a similar bill in the House. The U.S. Joint Committee on Taxation estimates the bill could save nearly $28 billion over ten years. This initiative aligns with Republican efforts to cut federal spending while addressing immigration policies under President Trump.
