Georgia death toll up to 11 from Helene; impact widespread in South | Georgia
SUMMARY: Georgia Governor Brian Kemp reported that Hurricane Helene has resulted in 11 fatalities, including a first responder. Specific details about the deaths remain unclear, but early reports indicated a couple died in Wheeler County due to a tornado. As of Friday, 152 roads were closed, including parts of I-16 and I-20. Helene’s remnants are causing flooding and tornado warnings in several states. Dr. Michael Brennan from the National Hurricane Center emphasized the severe flash flooding from North Georgia to western Virginia, especially in western North Carolina, where landslides have occurred. Residents are urged to avoid travel in affected areas.

Lawsuit: Sheriff couldn’t ‘stomach’ speech ‘distasteful’ to him | Georgia
SUMMARY: Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens is facing a federal lawsuit from David Cavender, his election opponent, and two residents for allegedly censoring comments on the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page. The dispute arose after a video showed Owens calling deputies to a Burger King due to a complaint, which went viral before the election. The lawsuit claims Owens restricted comments starting October 29, violating the plaintiffs’ First and 14th Amendment rights. They seek a jury trial, $3.50 in damages, and an injunction against further censorship. Owens won reelection with over 56% of the vote, admitting he regretted involving deputies in the incident.

Death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley | Trial continues in Athens courtroom Monday
SUMMARY: During day two of Jose Ibarra’s murder trial for the killing of nursing student Lakan Riley, law enforcement witnesses provided testimony about their findings from the day after the murder. Officers recounted their responses to the Argo Apartments, where they first encountered Ibarra’s brother, Diego. Body cam footage revealed Diego had no apparent injuries, while Jose, found asleep, had scratches on his arms. The prosecution highlighted differences between the brothers and noted DNA evidence linking Lakan to a hat seen on a suspect. The defense is attempting to confuse their identities as the trial continues. Coverage is ongoing.
The trial of a man accused of killing nursing student Laken Riley continues in Athens, with testimony expected to focus on evidence presented during Friday’s opening session.
Jose Ibarra, charged in Riley’s February death, waived his right to a jury trial, leaving Superior Court Judge H. Patrick Haggard to decide his fate.
