Gas Tank Getaways: Waterfalls in Mississippi
SUMMARY: JP Coleman State Park in Northeast Mississippi, built around man-made Pickwick Lake, is best explored by boat, especially to see Cooper Falls. In the extreme Southwest, Clark Creek Natural Area near Woodville offers several waterfalls along its trails, best visited in spring or fall. Owens Creek waterfall, accessible via a pull-off on the Natchez Trace, is typically a trickle but easy to reach. Mississippi's largest waterfall, Dunn's Falls near Meridian, is man-made and features a historical mill. For a quiet experience, seek out less crowded waterfalls or swimming holes, but always prioritize safety as they are typically without lifeguards.
