This movement, which aimed to secure voting rights for all Mississippians, was a key part of the Civil Rights Movement, leading to the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965. Hattiesburg was a significant site with over 100 out-of-state activists and 3,000 local participants. The marker particularly honors Dory and Joyce Lner of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The Mississippi Freedom Trail, launched in 2011, features over 30 markers statewide.
