Freedom Summer event held at Two Mississippi Museums
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Museum of History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum hosted a history happy hour to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Summer project. This creative educational event brought together teachers and students from various states, including Texas and Minnesota. The event, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities and National History, aimed to educate attendees about the 1964 Freedom Summer campaign, which sought to register African-American voters in Mississippi. Participants engaged in various activities, including visits to the Emmett Till Interpretive Center and the Fannie Lou Hamer Garden, and received teaching resources on civil rights history. The museums will continue to host Freedom Summer events until August 11th.
