Mississippi House Speaker Jason White talks about money issues facing the state
SUMMARY: House Speaker Jason White discussed the financial challenges facing Mississippi’s public employees retirement system during a talk at the Starkville Rotary Club. He acknowledged that the system, similar to Social Security, lacks enough funding to meet obligations. While lawmakers are committed to not harming retirees, significant action is needed, including possible legislative cash infusions. Despite contributing $110 million this past session, the system requires billions of dollars to stay solvent. White also highlighted efforts to cut taxes, even as the funding crisis persists, impacting many employees, including those at Mississippi State University.
