SUMMARY: Get ready for the Hattiesburg Zoo’s Fourth Annual Zoostock on August 25th, from 6:00 – 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 in advance or $20.00 at the gate. Dress up in 60s-themed attire for the event and take photos with the animals. Enjoy music from a DJ, hang out on the Splash Pad of Foam, or rent a cabana for $100. There will be refreshing drinks and food available for purchase. Play large-scale party games and ride the ‘Peace Train’. This event is for adults aged 21 and older and is sponsored by Stokes Distributing.

SUMMARY: Naturalist Sharon Milligan witnessed a dramatic encounter at a pond where a Banded Water Snake captured a Two-toed Amphiuma by its tail. Knowing the snake’s determination, the outcome was clear: the amphiuma would soon be swallowed whole despite its ability to deliver a painful bite. Water snakes are equipped with flexible jaws to consume large prey. This encounter highlighted the amphiuma’s rarity, as they are nocturnal and primarily inhabit burrows. Both species sit at the top of their local aquatic food chains, with water snakes able to tackle larger prey than the amphibians. Sharon’s documentation enriches understanding of these creatures.
