Supreme Court leaves in place Mississippi’s voting bar for people convicted of some crimes
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court has upheld Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era law that permanently disenfranchises individuals convicted of certain felonies, including nonviolent offenses. The court declined to review an appeal from residents who completed their sentences but cannot regain voting rights. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals determined that this practice does not violate the Constitution and that legislative action is necessary for change. Critics argue the law, originating from an aim to target Black individuals, contributes to the disenfranchisement of nearly 50,000 Mississippians, with restoration options being extremely limited. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented on the ruling.
