Forrest County firefighters gathering Helene relief supplies through Monday
SUMMARY: First responders in Hattiesburg and Forest County are organizing a disaster relief supply drive for Hurricane Helen victims in North Carolina. As floodwaters recede, the need for basic necessities has become apparent. Residents can donate items such as diapers, batteries, bug spray, flashlights, toys, baby wipes, and personal hygiene products at local fire stations until October 7th. This initiative, supported by Dunn Road Builders, reflects a shared community spirit, recalling support given during past disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Donations will be collected and transported by a crew from Dunn to assist those affected by the hurricane.

Hurricane hunters order new planes
SUMMARY: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is set to replace its aging WP-3 Orion hurricane hunter aircraft with new C-130J aircraft. These modernized planes will feature advanced avionics, digital displays, and enhanced radar systems, allowing for a comprehensive three-dimensional view of tropical systems. The upgrades support NOAA’s ongoing research efforts in hurricane monitoring. Adjustments will be made for the structural design differences between the P-3s and C-130s, including finding new technology to replace certain radar systems. NOAA has ordered two C-130Js, with an option for four more, aiming to improve hurricane operations and studies, particularly in the Pacific.
