Former Stone County Circuit Clerk sentenced to prison for fraud
SUMMARY: Former Stone County Circuit Clerk Jeffrey O’Neal has pled guilty to two counts of fraud for receiving payment based on fraudulent statements to the Stone County Board of Supervisors. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with 5 years suspended, and ordered to pay over $94,000 in restitution to Stone County. The investigation also revealed that O’Neal failed to perform many of his duties, including making payments to the county and victims of crime, and submitted fraudulent documents for allowances that had not been approved by a court judge. The State Auditor’s Office recovered over $86,000 O’Neal had deposited in county bank accounts.
