Former MPD officers federally charged in Nichols case enter not guilty pleas
SUMMARY: Four of the five former Memphis police officers indicted federally in the death of Tyre Nichols pleaded not guilty. They appeared before a federal judge and were handcuffed during the court proceedings. Three of the officers were seen entering the federal office building one day after their indictments were announced. The officers face charges of excessive force, failure to intervene, deliberate indifference, conspiracy to witness tamper, and witness tampering. They were released on an unsecured bond but will owe $50,000 if they fail to show up for court. The officers already face state criminal charges of second-degree murder in Nichols' case.

SUMMARY: After storms with a cold front, northeast Mississippi will experience dry and clear weather this weekend. Saturday and Sunday will see high temperatures in the lower 90s, with partly to mostly cloudy skies and low chances (20%) of isolated showers. Night temperatures will drop to the low to mid-70s, creating warm and muggy conditions, and heat indices could exceed 100. Next week, remnants of Beryl will impact the area, likely bringing rainy days and potentially gusty winds from Tuesday to Thursday. Beryl is expected to weaken into a tropical depression as it moves inland, passing near the area by mid-week.

Hattiesburg man charged with making bomb threat against Smith County business
SUMMARY: A Hattiesburg man, Tobias Smith, was arrested for allegedly making a bomb threat against Georgia Pacific Plywood in Smith County, Mississippi. The threat, received via text on July 5, led to the evacuation of employees. Smith, 27, was apprehended at the scene and charged with one count of terroristic threats. Before employees returned, bomb dogs searched the site for explosives. Smith is currently held at the Smith County Jail, awaiting a bond hearing. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Smith County Sheriff's Office.

Fourth of July events bring people together this weekend
