Former Lawrence County tax collector clerk charged with embezzlement
SUMMARY: Former deputy clerk Hollie Summers of the Lawrence County Tax Collector’s Office in Mississippi was arrested by the State Auditor’s office on charges of embezzlement and computer fraud. Auditor Shad White reported that Summers, who worked there from August 2017 to March 2022, allegedly reversed vehicle registration and renewal transactions. At her arrest, Summers received a demand letter for $48,885.37. White emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for public funds theft, praising Tax Collector Sherry Hyde-Thames for reporting Summers. If convicted, Summers could face up to 40 years in prison and $15,000 in fines.
