Former Jones County reserve deputy sentenced to 20 years for fatal shooting
SUMMARY: Former Jones County Deputy George R Ryan Walters was sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to second degree murder for shooting and killing a man in a church parking lot in Laurel. Walters will serve 10 years in prison and 10 years on probation. The victim’s daughter shared an impact statement expressing her hurt and anger towards Walters. Walters was originally charged with first-degree murder, but accepted a plea deal to the lesser charge. In addition to his sentence, Walters will have to pay court costs and fines. The incident occurred in April of 2023 at the Rock Pentecostal Church.
