Former Florissant police officer facing 21 counts in nude photo-stealing scandal
SUMMARY: Former Florissant police officer Julian Aala has been indicted on 20 misdemeanors and one felony charge for violating the civil rights of at least 20 women by allegedly stealing intimate photos during traffic stops. The incidents occurred between February and May, where Aala allegedly asked for victims’ phones under the pretense of checking insurance and then took inappropriate images. Aala has been accused of attempting to delete evidence of the misconduct and resigned in June after 11 months on the force. Attorneys representing the victims expressed hope that the indictment will bring closure and justice for the affected women.
The officer was facing four lawsuits involving 20 victims. Each of the new charges relate to one of those victims, including a felony obstruction of justice charge.

Missouri lawmakers consider placing St. Louis City police department under state control
SUMMARY: The mayor of St. Louis criticized lawmakers for proposing a state takeover of the city’s police department, deeming it “disrespectful.” Republicans backing the bill argue that rising crime negatively impacts the economy, while the St. Louis police chief asserts that local control is preferred by the community. Previous legislation had transferred oversight to the city in 2012, and the new Missouri governor supports the state control initiative. Some residents express mixed feelings, with some favoring more police presence, citing concerns about crime. Despite ongoing debates over the past two years, the current political climate may give the proposal new momentum.

Missouri legislators debate bill to expand restitution for wrongful convictions • Missouri Independent
SUMMARY: Kevin Strickland, wrongfully imprisoned for 43 years in Missouri, received no compensation for his wrongful conviction. After his 2021 exoneration, he testified about the devastating loss of his life and the medical issues he suffered in prison. Missouri law only compensates those proven innocent through DNA testing, limiting restitution for the wrongfully convicted. A bill was introduced to expand restitution eligibility and increase payment amounts. Strickland and other exonerees, like Joseph Amrine, support the bill, but prosecutors oppose it, arguing the bill’s evidence standard is too broad. The bill aims to help exonerees rebuild their lives after wrongful imprisonment.
