SUMMARY: The Little Red Schoolhouse on Highway 17 between I55 and Lexington, Mississippi is where the Order of the Eastern Star was created. The Eastern Star, associated with the Masons, was originally designed to share masonry principles with women. The school building was built in 1847 by Masonic lodges in Holmes County and the rituals of the Eastern Star were created by Mason Robert Morris. During the Civil War, the building was used by the Confederates and later became a school for African-American children. Not far from there is the Franklin church with Civil War history, including the involvement of the second Mississippi colored Cavalry. Both sites are a few miles apart in Holmes County, Mississippi.
