The cockroach, welded to a 150-foot tugboat, was placed offshore near Biloxi to aid marine life. This project is part of the Mississippi Artificial Reef Plan, which began in 1999 to restore ecosystems damaged by overharvesting and Hurricane Katrina. The reef aims to provide a breeding ground and food source for marine life, contributing to the Gulf’s ecosystem and revitalizing sports fishing in the region.
