Florence District 1 pioneers AI policy, invests nearly $500k in educational technology
SUMMARY: Florence District 1 has become the first school district in South Carolina to implement a new AI policy, investing nearly $500,000 in educational technology. Approved at a recent Board of Trustees meeting, the policy will allow teachers and students to utilize AI platforms like Google Gemini and Magic School. The deputy superintendent noted that AI can save teachers up to 15 hours weekly in lesson planning and grading. To ensure ethical use, the district is focusing on platforms that meet privacy standards. The initiative aims to enhance learning and prepare students for the future in an increasingly AI-driven world.

Nearly half a million dollars worth of Artificial Intelligence products will be used in Florence District 1 schools.
Florence 1 is the first district in the state to introduce an AI policy.
After several months of planning, school administrators said AI would be a benefit to the district.
“We’re going to give our students a leg up in our state and make sure that they are proficient when they leave our school system,” Kyle Jones, FSD1 Deputy Superintendent said.

Table Rock & Persimmon Ridge fires now considered a complex wildfire
SUMMARY: Two large wildfires in South Carolina, the Table Rock and Persimmon Ridge fires, are now considered a complex wildfire, meaning they are being managed as a single incident. The Table Rock fire has burned 1,156 acres, while the Persimmon Ridge fire is at 314 acres. Over 100 personnel are working to contain the flames, with bulldozers creating firebreaks. Though no structures are immediately threatened, around 500 homes are under voluntary evacuation orders. Difficult conditions, including hurricane debris and dry, windy weather, are complicating firefighting efforts. Burn bans remain in place in both North and South Carolina.
