First welding class of women inmates graduates from MDOC program

SUMMARY: A group of female inmates at the Mississippi Correctional Institute for Women (MCIW) have become the first graduating class in the state’s welding vocational program. Ten women enrolled in intensive classroom study and passed rigorous tests to become certified welders. Their certification will make them employable in industries such as ironworks and shipbuilding. Many of the graduates will also serve as teachers for future inmates in the program. The goal is to provide these women with skills that will help them find employment after their release and build a promising future. The next step is a job fair at the prison, where construction industries have signed up to attend. By attending classes and graduating with certified diplomas, inmates can reduce their time in prison.
