First named storm of season: Tropical Storm Alberto
SUMMARY: The first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Alberto, is significantly impacting Corpus Christi, even though it’s 400 miles from the storm’s center, which will eventually make landfall in Mexico. The region is experiencing intense, intermittent tropical downpours leading to freshwater flooding, complemented by 2 to 3 feet of storm surge causing saltwater flooding. While Corpus Christi is somewhat protected by a seawall, areas like North Beach are inundated with water. These impacts are expected to last until at least Friday, with a possibility of another storm following. – Molly McCullum, The Weather Channel.

9/27- An overall nice weekend with cooler than average temps
SUMMARY: Happy Friday! The tropics are very active with Hurricane Isaac and Tropical Storm Joy in the Atlantic, both staying offshore and not affecting land, mainly impacting shipping routes. Other systems are being monitored for potential development, particularly in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, remnants of former Hurricane Helen are transitioning to an extratropical cyclone, bringing rain and cooler temperatures to parts of the Central U.S. Local areas may experience light sprinkles and gusty winds, but overall, the weekend looks pleasant with cooler temperatures and sunshine, although a light shower is possible Saturday morning. Temperatures might warm up next week.

Meridian addressing state owned abandoned property issue
SUMMARY: The state of Mississippi has reclaimed properties from owners who fell behind on tax payments. Many lots are too small for new constructions, but the city suggests purchasing adjoining lots to expand land. Currently, the city is managing 550 abandoned state-owned properties but lacks the resources for comprehensive maintenance. Recently, they have hired contractors for some upkeep, including mowing. However, with so many properties, complete maintenance is unfeasible. Interested individuals can visit the Lauderdale County website’s tax assessor page to view available state-owned properties for sale.
