First day of school zone speeding cameras recap
SUMMARY: The city of Hattisburg has implemented new school zone speeding cameras, which are currently being used in two school zones as part of a pilot program. These handheld radar cameras are operated by officers on-site and are triggered manually, not automatically. If a car is caught speeding in a school zone, the camera will capture the license plate and video of the incident, potentially leading to a ticket being issued. The goal of this initiative is to increase safety in school zones and change drivers’ behavior. HPD is currently reviewing potential violations and plans to expand the program to other school zones in the fall.
HPD is only using the new technology in two school zones as a part of the pilot program.
