Minimal rainfall brings mixed bag
SUMMARY: Rainfall has been slow to return to the Pine Belt, alleviating drought but presenting challenges for local farmers. In Pearl River County, cattle farmer Jeff Easterling mentions increased feeding costs and adjustments to livestock diets due to the drought. He anticipates waiting three weeks before fully grazing cattle. Conversely, soybean farmer John Corley found the drought beneficial for his recent harvest, enabling efficient harvesting and pest control. Experts note that optimal soybean yields need consistent rainfall during late summer and early fall for maturation. Overall, the drought presents mixed outcomes for the local agriculture sector.

Jackson police work to solve recent homicides
SUMMARY: The Jackson Police Department (JPD) has solved the two latest homicides, making three arrests within 24 hours, with a fourth pending. Police Chief Joseph Wade attributes the 80% solvability rate to a new focused approach that prioritizes witness statements, physical evidence, and technology. He emphasizes accountability for violent crimes, aided by new federal resources after Jackson was designated a public safety partnership city. While crime rates have declined, Wade stresses the importance of community involvement and judicial reform, advocating for stricter bail for violent offenders to bolster crime-fighting efforts.
