It’s 93°F, and the heat continues in the desert Southwest and across the Southeast. The remnants of Hurricane Barrel have caused significant flooding in Vermont, and power outages persist around Houston due to storm impacts. For the weekend, expect hot temperatures with humidity making it feel worse, hit-or-miss showers, and high heat across the Plains and Southeast. The hurricane season is relatively calm now, but activity may increase. Stay safe, hydrated, and cautious in the heat.

SUMMARY: Local leaders and activists in the Tupelo Community convened for a seminar focused on addressing youth violence. Speakers, including Tupelo Police Chief Deputy Anthony Hill, emphasized the importance of community and parental involvement in curbing violent crimes among youth. Hill highlighted a rise in car burglaries linked to youth obtaining guns from unlocked vehicles. A representative from Saving Sarah’s Daughters noted an increase in young women involved in violent crimes and stressed the need for guidance and support. Attendees agreed that collaboration across the community, including religious and law enforcement sectors, is crucial in steering youth away from violence.

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Farmers Market recently held its annual Peanut Bowl, showcasing fresh Mississippi-grown peanuts from Rogers Farms and the Mississippi Peanut Growers Association. Attendees emphasized the convenience and enjoyment of shopping locally in Jackson, where they found a diverse selection of goods, including vegetables, butter beans, watermelons, and more. Shoppers were encouraged to arrive early to receive complimentary bags of baled peanuts, enhancing the festive atmosphere of the market. SUMMARY: Petal area police officers and firefighters held a special Memorial today to honor the heroes of 9/11 while raising funds for First Responders in need. The annual Memorial stair climb at Petal Panther football stadium saw dozens of residents participating, each climbing the equivalent of 115 flights of stairs to commemorate those who attempted to save lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The event not only paid tribute but also aimed to raise around $5,000 for local charity Local Legends, to assist First Responders like firefighter Kaylee Randolph, who faced significant medical expenses after an accident.
