FIRST ALERT: Keeping an eye on the heat and tropics (08/08/2024)
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Aaron Colby forecasts intense heat for the next few days, with heat advisories in effect until 7 PM due to heat indices approaching or exceeding 110°F. Yesterday’s record high of 100°F at Gulfport Airport is expected to be matched or surpassed today. Temperatures will remain around 100°F, with a slight cooldown into the upper 90s over the weekend. A slow-moving front next week may lower temperatures into the mid-90s but will bring minimal rain. In the tropics, Tropical Storm Debbie is moving through the Carolinas with no immediate threat to South Mississippi. Other tropical waves are being monitored for future development.

Flooding is reported on Highway 90, prompting caution for drivers. Schools will close for the day but are expected to reopen Friday. Turner promises to keep updates coming as the situation evolves.
