Fireworks fun continues through weekend
SUMMARY: Fireworks celebrations in Mississippi continue this weekend. In Lowndes County, New Hope Strong's “Peace, Love, and Freedom Celebration” begins Saturday at 4 p.m. at the New Hope Community Center, with fireworks at 9 p.m. Tishomingo hosts its annual street dance at Tishomingo Baptist Church's parking lot starting at 6:30 p.m., with fireworks at 10 p.m. Sherman Park in Sherman will also have a celebration on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., ending with fireworks. PHOTOS: Man wanted for kidnapping 7-month-old in Jackson
SUMMARY: Jackson police released surveillance images of a man suspected in the kidnapping of a 7-month-old girl taken from a running car at a Shell gas station on Beasley Road. The child's mother left the car running when a masked man drove off with it. The vehicle was later found abandoned outside Brent's Drugs in the Fondren neighborhood with the unharmed baby inside. An Amber Alert was initiated but resolved before its issuance. Police are considering charges against the mother and are still searching for the suspect. Information can be provided to Jackson Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

Fire damages home on Turtle Lane in Rankin County
SUMMARY: Reservoir firefighters responded to a fire at a Rankin County home on Turtle Lane around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2024. The homeowners noticed the fire on the back porch but managed to escape safely. The fire quickly spread throughout the house, reaching the attic and causing the roof to collapse. MHP responds to 4 fatal crashes during 2024 Independence Day Enforcement Period
SUMMARY: During the 2024 Independence Day Travel Period (July 4-7), the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) responded to four fatal crashes in Pearl River, Scott, Sunflower, and Pike Counties, resulting in four deaths. MHP issued a total of 6,474 citations, cited 876 drivers for occupant restraint violations, and made 149 arrests for impaired driving. Additionally, they investigated 141 crashes resulting in 45 injuries. This year's enforcement activity showed an increase in citations, DUIs, seatbelt and child restraint citations, and crashes compared to the 2023 two-day travel period.
