SUMMARY: Closing arguments will begin tomorrow in the federal trial concerning Tyree Nichols’ beating death. Today, attorneys for the three former Memphis police officers wrapped up their cases. While Demetrius Haley and Tarius Bean’s attorneys announced they were finished, Martin Zumach, representing Justin Smith, called additional witnesses, including character witnesses and an expert. Two former Memphis police lieutenants testified that Smith was a “good officer,” but they also admitted that a good officer would not repeatedly strike someone during an arrest. The trial is one of three related to Nichols’ death, with additional trials pending for murder and civil suits.

The final witnesses testified in the trial of three former Memphis Police officers charged in the beating death of Tyre Nichols. One of the witnesses, a Memphis Police Department lieutenant, even went as far to say that if his child was arrested, he’d want one of the officers on trial to be the one who made the arrest.
