Fight brewing over federal election monitors in Texas as polls prepare to open

SUMMARY: On election day, polls will open in less than an hour, and over 81 million people have already voted nationwide, including 9 million in Texas. In Harris County alone, there are 700 voting centers. Tensions are high with Democrats calling for federal monitors due to concerns over voter suppression, particularly among minorities. Republicans argue that the record voter turnout indicates fair elections and view the oversight as unnecessary. Harris County Judge Lena Hado supports the monitor’s presence to ensure transparency. Political experts suggest that the debate over monitor access hinges on federal and state laws.

As federal election monitors make their way to Texas, there’s a last-minute political battle brewing over whether they have a role in state-run elections.

SUMMARY: Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order to combat harassment and coercion by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against Chinese dissidents in Texas. The order directs the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to arrest individuals involved in CCP influence operations, including “Operation Fox Hunt,” which aims to forcibly return dissidents to China. Abbott emphasized that Texas will not tolerate such actions against its 250,000 residents of Chinese descent. The order comes as the legislature prepares to discuss national security issues and follows recent FBI charges against CCP-linked individuals. Texas Land Commissioner Don Buckingham expressed full support for Trump’s strategy, emphasizing the need to remove illegal criminals from the country. Meanwhile, Governor Greg Abbott plans to reinstate buoy barriers in the Rio Grande to deter crossings. The Trump transition team has not yet confirmed the acceptance of Texas’ offer, although they plan significant deportation efforts upon taking office.

The Texas General Land Office is offering President-elect Donald Trump a 1,400-acre Starr County ranch as a site to build detention centers for his promised mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
