Fifth Circuit squashes district court ruling on Texas election law, blocks another portion of it | Texas

SUMMARY: The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned a district court’s ruling that blocked parts of ‘ election integrity , which went into effect in September 2021. U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez had ruled that the ballot harvesting restriction violated constitutional rights, but the appeals court criticized the timing of his injunction, arguing it could confuse voters close to the election. The Fifth Circuit’s allows the to enforce the law and investigate election violations. Additionally, the Secretary of State’s Office is appealing another ruling affecting the law’s canvassing provisions, further complicating legal interpretations ahead of the election.

Case of Meningococcal Disease confirmed at Houston ISDโ€™s Bonham Elementary School

SUMMARY: A case of meningococcal disease has been confirmed at HISD’s Botom Elementary School in southwest Houston. District have notified and are in communication with the Houston Department. and staff who may have into contact with the affected individual have been informed. Meningococcal disease can manifest as meningitis or bloodstream infections, with symptoms fever, headache, stiff neck, and nausea. The CDC highlights that while the bacteria isn’t highly contagious, it can spread through respiratory secretions. Vaccination is recommended as a preventative measure. Further updates from the district are expected.

The district said the school sent notifications to families and information to staff and students who may have been in close contact with the confirmed case.
