State Auditor Shad White discusses audit on state agencies
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s State Auditor, Shad White, released a report called “Project Momentum,” focused on identifying wasteful spending in state agencies. This audit, the first in 30 years, aims to save taxpayers over $335 million. The report targets 13 agencies, including the Department of Education and Medicaid. White suggests the savings could eliminate the grocery tax or fund significant teacher pay raises and increase police presence. While the auditor’s office can’t make changes, it hopes policymakers will act on these recommendations. White emphasizes the importance of addressing waste before a potential recession, providing a roadmap for future cuts.
