FEMA shuts down temporary help centers but will remain in state as Milton nears
SUMMARY: In Tampa Bay, FEMA faces challenges as it helps residents recover from Hurricane Helen while preparing for Hurricane Milton. A disaster recovery center in Hillsborough County, open just a week after Helen, is temporarily shutting down due to evacuations as Milton approaches. Over 120,000 people have sought FEMA aid following Helen, with around $50 million allocated. President Biden has approved additional FEMA aid for 38 counties in Milton’s path, dispelling rumors of a funding shortage. Although some recovery centers are closing, residents can still apply for assistance online or by phone as FEMA remains committed to Florida’s recovery efforts.
