FEMA extends deadline for July flooding assistance applications
SUMMARY: Months after last July’s severe flooding in the Metro East, many residents still need aid. FEMA has extended the application deadline to December 13 for online and phone applications. In-person assistance is available at the Kokia Heights Fitness Center until this Friday. Over $14 million has been distributed to more than 28,000 households across seven counties, with significant aid for St. Clair County. Many residents are encouraged to document their damages for easier processing. Washington County received federal support for the first time, and both individuals and small businesses are urged to apply for financial assistance.
Homeowners and renters who suffered damage or loss from July flooding have additional time to apply for federal disaster assistance. FEMA has extended the application deadline to Dec. 13, 2024, for residents in Cook, Fulton, Henry, St. Clair, Washington, Will and Winnebago counties.

New Therapy for Dogs with Cancer
SUMMARY: The Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis recently highlighted a promising treatment for lymphoma, the most common cancer in dogs and humans. Professor Jeffrey Bryan from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine discussed how a dog named Sadie played a pivotal role in this research. Sadie received CAR T-cell therapy, which involves engineering human cells to attack canine cancer cells. This innovative approach is cost-effective and allows for quicker treatment. Sadie’s progress is tracked via PET scans, aiding the understanding of how these engineered cells move in the body, which could improve outcomes for both dogs and humans in cancer treatment.

Roundabout opening part of major I-55 improvements in Jefferson County
SUMMARY: Residents provided feedback on a new roundabout opened by MoDOT near the Festus exit off Interstate 55, part of a $246 million project aimed at improving traffic and safety. While some drivers appreciate the enhanced visibility, others are confused by the new layout, leading to minor accidents and fender benders. Tow truck operator Chad Smith noted an uptick in incidents, including a driver who ended up in mud due to misjudgment. Many locals hope that the confusion will lessen over time, as they adjust to the change. Drivers are reminded to yield to those already in the roundabout for safety.
The latest roundabout section in the southeast section of the Interstate 55 and Route 67 interchange in Festus is now open.
