FEMA closing 5 disaster recovery centers in Mississippi; 2 to remain open
SUMMARY: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced the permanent closure of five disaster recovery centers in Mississippi, effective July 8. The closing centers are located in Hancock, Madison, Neshoba, Scott Counties, and one of two centers in Hinds County. Despite these closures, other centers in Hinds and Humphreys Counties will remain open. Officials will assist storm survivors of the April 8-11 events until 5 p.m. on the last day. Survivors can still apply for federal assistance via DisasterAssistance.gov, the FEMA mobile app, or by calling the helpline. The deadline for assistance applications is August 9. To date, over $2.6 million has been granted.

Murder suspect arrested following manhunt in Harrison County
SUMMARY: A manhunt in Harrison County concluded with the arrest of Bricen John Rivers, charged with one count of murder. Deputies responded to Wolf River Cemetery, where they found Rivers running into the woods. A deceased woman, 22-year-old Lauren Johansen of Gulfport, was found in the vehicle Rivers fled from. Johansen, reported missing July 2, attended school in Hattiesburg. Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the search, ultimately locating Rivers and arresting him. He is held at Harrison County Adult Detention Facility on a $1 million bond.

Police thwart Smith County man’s murder-for-hire plot
SUMMARY: A Smith County man, Randall Hutchinson, was arrested last Sunday for his involvement in a murder-for-hire plot targeting two individuals. The Smith County Sheriff's Office caught Hutchinson on June 23 as he attempted to flee. He had allegedly offered $12,000 to an unnamed individual to execute the murders, providing them with a firearm, gloves, and ammunition. Sheriff Joel Houston confirmed that investigators' swift actions prevented a possible tragedy. Hutchinson was charged with two felony murder attempt offenses and had his bond set at $100,000. The case will be prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office of the 13th District.

Engineer charged with obstruction of justice following 2017 plane crash that killed 16 military members
SUMMARY: A former Georgia engineer, James Michael Fisher, has been arrested for making false statements and obstructing justice in a federal investigation into a military plane crash that killed 16 personnel in Mississippi on July 10, 2017. The incident involved a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130, known as “Yanky 72,” and led to the deaths of 15 Marines and one Navy corpsman. Fisher, previously a lead propulsion engineer, allegedly concealed key documents and provided false information to investigators.
