Federal funding freeze stirs panic, confusion for Tarrant County Meals on Wheels
SUMMARY: Nonprofits like Meals on Wheels are in turmoil over potential funding cuts from a federal freeze linked to the Trump Administration. A recent memo raised concerns regarding federal grants and aid, critical to organizations serving vulnerable populations. Meals on Wheels, which relies on federal funding for 37% of its resources, faced uncertainty as it caters to 1,000 clients in Tarrant County. However, it later clarified that it is exempt from the freeze as it provides direct benefits to individuals. The White House confirmed that programs like Social Security, Medicare, and food stamps will remain unaffected, leaving some confusion about other areas impacted by the executive order.

Organizations like Meals on Wheels rely heavily on federal funding to be able to serve their clients. But a lack of clear messaging from the White House left many in the dark over whether they would be affected and, if so, what to do next.

Details of 6-month-old Northwest Side apartment murder surprising to suspect’s neighbor
SUMMARY: San Antonio police have arrested 40-year-old Philip Ramirez in connection with the murder of 44-year-old Andrea Unzelda, whose death was initially reported as an accidental overdose. Investigators discovered a bloody scene in Ramirez’s apartment on Fredericksburg Road, with evidence suggesting Unzelda had been beaten and strangled. A neighbor recalled hearing a loud argument the night of the incident but was unaware of the severity of the situation. An autopsy revealed the cause of death, shifting the case from accidental death to murder. Ramirez is currently held in jail on murder charges and other warrants.

Trump’s latest round of tariffs have taken effect — and more retaliation is coming. What we know
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has initiated extensive tariffs against nearly all U.S. trading partners, with a new wave of tariffs taking effect recently, including a minimum 10% rate. These “reciprocal” tariffs apply severe rates up to 50%, particularly affecting smaller economies. China is set to counter with an 84% tariff on American goods, responding to Trump’s escalated measures. The European Union also approved retaliatory tariffs on $23 billion worth of products. Existing tariffs include 25% on steel and aluminum, with potential for more product-specific taxes. Economic experts warn these tariffs will raise consumer prices amid ongoing trade tensions.
