Federal disaster recovery center in Humphreys County to close on Saturday

SUMMARY: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will close its final disaster recovery center in Humphreys County, Mississippi, on Saturday at 2 p.m. Located at the county’s multipurpose building in Belzoni, the center has been aiding those affected by severe weather since April. and federal will assist with applications for federal aid and referrals. Previously, similar centers in other counties have also shut down after distributing approximately $6.6 million in assistance. Although the physical centers are closing, FEMA will continue processing appeals and assisting applicants. The application deadline for aid is August 9.

‘Horror wasp’ is the new buzz as Mississippi scientists discover frightening insect species

Researchers at Mississippi , led by Assistant Professor Matthew Ballinger, have discovered a new parasitic wasp species, Syntretus perlmani, which lays its eggs in the abdomen of fruit flies. The wasp embryo hatches inside the living fly and emerges roughly 18 days later, resembling an alien creature. This terrifying leaves the fly alive for several hours post-emergence. The research, published in Nature, revealed this unique behavior, as previous studies focused on wasps attacking immature stages. This discovery may also control fruit fly populations, which are commonly considered pests.

Mississippi Book Festival unites 37,000 readers through 10th edition
