Federal court strikes down Mississippi’s lifetime voting ban for convicted felons
SUMMARY: The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that a Mississippi law implementing a lifetime voting ban on some convicted felons is unconstitutional. The court ruled that the provision violates the eighth amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which outlaws cruel and unusual punishment. The law, implemented in 1890 during the Jim Crow era, was allegedly a measure aimed at disenfranchising Black voters. The court has ordered the state to stop enforcing the portion of the law that prevents certain individuals from voting. If upheld, the ruling could result in the restoration of voting rights for many Mississippians by the November 7 general elections.
