SUMMARY: Two nonprofits celebrated after the Little Rock Planning Commission paused developers’ plans to build housing in the Dunbar neighborhood, a historic African-American area. The Dumar Historic Neighborhood Association, led by Angel Bert, fought to preserve the area’s cultural significance, particularly after the demolition of a historic house. Developers proposed new homes to address the housing crisis, but Bert emphasized the irreplaceable value of the neighborhood’s history. The Commission voted to reject the proposal, but Bert’s advocacy continues, aiming to protect Dunbar’s legacy. The developer, Erica York of EY Custom Homes, was surprised by the resistance to her project.

On Thursday, developers went before the planning commission hoping to build housing in the historic Dunbar neighborhood.
