SUMMARY: The Fayetteville City Council recently voted 5-3 to lift an easement protecting seven century-old oak trees next to Fayetteville High School, allowing for the construction of a new parking deck. Six of the trees will be removed, sparking opposition from community members who cherish the area’s natural landscape. Arborist Andrea Fournet, concerned about the loss of trees in Northwest Arkansas, acknowledges the need for additional parking, as the school currently has insufficient spaces for its 2,600 students. Despite the decision, some community members feel the council acted hastily, prioritizing development over environmental preservation.
