Potential for Catastrophic Flooding as Helene Moves Inland
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen’s impact is expected to extend well inland, potentially causing catastrophic flooding in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Asheville, North Carolina, recorded over 4 inches of rain on Wednesday, totaling more than 9 inches, with more rain anticipated. The saturated ground leaves little room for additional rain, raising concerns about river flooding, particularly in areas affected by the Swannanoa River’s past floods in 2004. The French Broad River is also under monitoring for flooding, while tropical storm-force winds may lead to power outages in Asheville as conditions worsen.
The Weather Channel Meteorologist Felicia Combs reports from Asheville, North Carolina where she says impacts from Hurricane Helene will reach far past the coast and well inland. It could be catastrophic flooding for places like Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Credit: The Weather Channel // Date: 9/26/2024
