“Farm to Trouble” series highlights Mississippi Sound Coalition’s long term mission
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Sound Coalition is raising awareness about pollutants flowing down the Mississippi River, exacerbated by flooding. Their campaign, dubbed “Farm to Trouble,” highlights the adverse effects of agricultural runoff, which harms the Mississippi Sound's marine ecosystem. The opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway in Louisiana in recent years allowed freshwater and pollutants to intrude into the Mississippi Sound, causing significant environmental damage. Despite federal and state efforts, the problem persists, with pollutants constantly flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, contributing to a growing hypoxic zone. The Coalition emphasizes the urgency of addressing this pollution through a public awareness series.
“Farm to Trouble” is a five-part collaborative with investigative reporting.

Humane Society of South Mississippi preparing for ‘massive influx’ of stray animals following Fou…
SUMMARY: The Humane Society of South Mississippi emphasizes the importance of planning for pets during July 4th fireworks, as this period sees a significant increase in runaway pets. The shelter experiences a massive influx of stray animals around this holiday due to pets being frightened by loud noises. Presently, the shelter is over capacity with 412 animals, nearly 300 of which are dogs. To mitigate this, they recommend updating ID collars and microchips. Additionally, they are offering a “5 Days of Freedom” adoption special with fee-waived adoptions to free up space. Pet owners should check their local shelter if their pet goes missing.
The Humane Society of South Mississippi already shelters all animals indoors. However, like most shelters, there is limited space.
